by Mark P. Steele Since I began translating the hefty manuscript that I call 'Don Juan Unbound', several years have elapsed. My efforts to find a publisher for the work have led me to the web, and to ANERIS PRESS, who have graciously allowed me to serialize this work, or at least a portion of it. Difficulties in the translation have continued. Much of the manuscript is in clear, bold writing, but portions of it are shaky, and hard to read. Many of the pages have been ripped from the red leather binding, and re-inserted in what appears to be random order. In addition, it appears that not all of the pages of the journal are in the manuscript that I received several years ago. A package sent to me last September from California contained pages that appear to be from the journal that I had not seen before, covering the events of Eric's stay in Afghanistan in more detail than I had read previously. Also, the author does not seem to have written the journal in a strictly chronological fashion, thus making the reconstruction of the original page order that much more difficult. For these reasons, I am releasing this partial translation, covering the events of Eric's life from his birth, his marriage to a gipsy woman, his fleeing from France, the time in Afghanistan, and through the Persian war. Readers will find few references to the Paris Opera House and to Christine Daae in this sequence, but they will find much about the events that helped transform Eric into the Phantom of the Opera. Enjoy. |
